Stanley Liew

Each month we chat to a different local in the city to find out their top tips on discovering Edinburgh. This month we caught up with Stanley Liew, an Instagrammer who lives and studies in the city. In between working towards a degree in medicine, Stanley enjoys exploring Edinburgh’s streets and sampling it’s culinary delights! Here he shares his favourites.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! My name is Stanley. I moved to Edinburgh in 2011 to study medicine. I started using Instagram as a means to encourage myself to explore life beyond George Square.

What are your favourite places to eat and drink in the city?

Tough question! My cravings are as fickle as the Scottish weather. I absolutely love going to menu tasting sessions at Three Birds. You never know what to expect. Once I had a Yorkshire pudding inspired dessert with horseradish ice-cream! Brunch at Loudons is a must. Love love love the Brazilian crepes at Tupiniquim. Plus, the owners Gardenia and Fernando are the nicest people on earth. Favourite coffee spot will have to be Leo and Ted. They also do incredible scones.

Any little hidden gems in the city you would recommend to visitors?

I love Stack Dim Sum, a little dim sum shop tucked in a corner along Leith Walk. Their tender braised pork pot rice with preserved vegetables is the ultimate comfort food.

What haven’t you done yet but would like to do?

This is terrible but I have never been to Camera Obscura. I tend to spend money on food!

Describe your perfect day in Edinburgh!

The perfect day would be sunny and warm. I would wake up and go for a morning run around Blackford Hill, before having brunch at Piecebox Cafe. I would them take a nice stroll along the Union Canal and browse the Edinburgh Farmer’s Market. Then it would be time for coffee catch ups with friends at either Brewlab or Machina Espresso before heading to Affogato for Ice-cream. Dinner would be at at Kyloe’s. The Edinburgh Fringe would be on and I would catch a show in the evening. Alternatively, cinema night at the Dominion Cinema would also be ideal, before capping the night off with drinks at Paradise Palms. And if I’m still hungry after, a chicken kebab at Palmyra’s!
