Mamasan Bar & Brasserie One Night In Shanghai Delivery Review

We were kindly invited to sample the ‘One Night In…..’ concept by hugely popular Glasgow based restaurant, Mamasan. For those who don’t know Mamasan Bar and Brasserie was founded by Scottish entrepreneur and Edinburgh-born Brad Stevens in 2020, and has fast become one of Glasgow’s most iconic restaurants with an innovative menu inspired by South East Asian dining.

Like many other restaurants during CoVid times, Mamasan has diversified its business offering and now offers an excellent delivery service with their ‘One Night In….’ concept.

January took Mamasan at-home diners to Bangkok and February presents a boxed culinary tour of Shanghai. Four other South East Asian destinations are set to follow in the coming months giving diners the chance to explore dishes and cocktails inspired by the authentic flavours, aromas and spices of that location with different mouth-watering set menus to cook at home.

Our ‘One Night in Shanghai’ Experience

The day before delivery I received a pleasant phone call from one of the Mamasan team members confirming delivery arrangements and how to store the culinary box should I decided to cook at a later date. The produce is made fresh to order so the box has an approximate shelf life if 2-3 days.

Beautifully presented in a stylish box, with every dish and ingredient clearly labelled – it looked so good I didn’t want to take anything out of the box and mess up the presentation.

A menu card with allergen information and clear cooking instructions was also provided within the box. I must say I haven’t ordered many cook at home style take-away as I’m a bit sceptical that my limited cooking skills will do it justice but at first glance the cooking instructions looked super simple. Thumbs up from me.

Our ‘One night in Shanghai’ flight of flavours comprised of:

Snack: Lobster and prawn toast served with burnt chilli jam

Salad: Green papaya and carrot salad with a sesame soy dressing

Starter: Aromatic braised duck leg spring roll serve with hoisin sauce

Main: Sweet and sour Iberico pork with stir fried vegetables but not just any vegetables, pineapple, banana shallots, dragon fruit served with egg fried rice. We decided not to add the egg as the jasmine rice and garnish was just so fluffy.

Dessert: Asian pear stick toffee pudding with sweet toffee sauce.

Cocktail: Shang-hai-tea which is a green tea infused gin, lemon, peach infused chartreuse finished with lychee pearls and Sichuan pepper.

To cook the snack and starter simply pop in the oven and heat for 10 mins, the pork also simply heated in the oven whilst the sweet and sour sauce and exotic veg heated on the hob as did the rice. Everything was soooo easy to cook and the timings for each course worked really well – I certainly didn’t feel rushed and despite being the designated cook, it didn’t detract from enjoying the entire experience.

It was perfectly clear to see that each dish was freshly prepared and the attention to detail in terms of garnish, such as the edible flowers, and other accompaniments was absolutely outstanding.

The cocktail didn’t look much in the bottle but once poured into the glass with the finishing touches, it looked and tasted superb. It was quite potent too!

The quality of this cook-at-home culinary experience was excellent. It made for a fun and sophisticated evening in. I’d highly recommend.
